Data & Methodology

Clear definitions make market data easier to use. This page explains what the site measures, when it updates, and what its readings do not claim.

What the site measures

tradingtwohundred compares the latest available price for tracked stocks, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies with each asset's 200-day moving average. It also summarizes participation across the S&P 500, sectors, and other tracked groups.

Market breadth

S&P 500 breadth is the percentage of tracked S&P 500 members whose latest price is above their 200-day moving average. Each tracked stock contributes one vote to the percentage, so the reading is equal-weighted rather than a market-cap-weighted index return.

Moving-average signals

The 200-day moving average is a rolling average of an asset's closing prices. A golden cross occurs when the 50-day moving average moves above the 200-day average; a death cross is the opposite relationship. These are lagging trend summaries, not forecasts.

Update timing

The site is not real-time. Data is pulled after the most recent completed US market session, processed into the site's data files, and then deployed. Weekends and market holidays do not create a new completed session. The update timestamp on the site identifies the freshness of the displayed data.

How to use the numbers

Use the readings as context. Compare the current value with its history, check whether sectors agree, and use the individual-stock tools to understand what is underneath the headline. The dashboard guide explains a practical reading order, while the indicator guide explains the limits of technical signals.

Data boundaries

  • Data can be delayed, revised, incomplete, or affected by a provider or processing error.
  • Tracked universes and classifications can change as securities and source data change.
  • Historical breadth is calculated using the site's tracked universe and should not be treated as a total-market measure.
  • Technical readings do not account for an individual person's goals, taxes, time horizon, or risk tolerance.
