Market Breadth Weekly · October 03, 2026
Technology is carrying a market that is narrowing.
A concise weekly note on what is moving beneath the index.
Breadth 42.0% S&P 500 above 200-day | Crosses 18 / 7 death vs. golden | Leadership Technology +1.6% this week |
The Read
Only 42 percent of S&P 500 companies are trading above their 200-day moving average, the long-term trend line most people use to judge whether a stock is still healthy. That is four points lower than last week, and it matches where participation stood a year ago: the entire year's worth of broadening has been given back, 22 points of it, while the index itself is only 1.8 percent below its 60-day high. Two readings of the same market, and they no longer agree on what kind of year this was.
Underneath: Technology rose 1.6 percent and sits 20.1 percent above its own 200-day line, while Communication Services, Real Estate and Materials each dropped more than two percent, and the long-term trend signals have tilted hard: 18 stocks saw their 50-day average fall below their 200-day, a death cross, against just 7 of the reverse. Breadth peaked at 73 on August 13 and has been shedding ever since, leaving the current reading in the 18th percentile of the past five years.
What to watch: Look for whether anything outside Technology starts reclaiming its 200-day line, or whether the death cross count keeps outrunning the golden crosses.
Breadth is at the 18th percentile of its own 5-year history — a neutral regime. The SPY is 1.8% off its 60-day high while breadth has moved from 73% to 40% over that same window — a classic narrowing-breadth warning sign.
