Stocks Trading Above & Below 200-Day Moving Average

The 200-day moving average is one of the most watched technical indicators on Wall Street—but why 200-MA? When a stock trades above it, it's in an uptrend. Below it? Downtrend. Traders watch this line to gauge momentum, spot support, and catch trend reversals.

S&P 500 200-day moving average: common questions

What percent of S&P 500 stocks are above their 200-day moving average?
As of Oct 17, 2026, 12:56 AM UTC, 51.5% of S&P 500 stocks tracked here (256 of 497) are trading above their 200-day moving average. That reading points to a market split roughly down the middle.
Why does the percent of S&P 500 stocks above the 200-day average matter?
It measures how many stocks are participating in a trend, not just how the index price moves. An index can make new highs while fewer and fewer of its stocks are above their 200-day average, which is the kind of narrowing that breadth readings are used to spot.
How often is this updated?
Once per trading day, after the market closes. Each stock is compared with its own 200-day simple moving average of closing prices.
Is a stock below its 200-day moving average a sell signal?
Not by itself. The 200-day average is a widely watched trend line, and a close below it means the long-term trend has weakened, but many stocks cross it repeatedly without a lasting move. This is educational data, not investment advice.
